Operation Encompass

St Martins is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all children. As part of this commitment, we are proud to participate in Operation Encompass.

Operation Encompass is a partnership between schools, Derbyshire Constabulary, Derby City Council and safeguarding agencies. Its purpose is to ensure that children who may have been affected by a domestic abuse incident receive timely and appropriate support in school. When police attend a domestic abuse incident where a child is present, lives in the household, or may otherwise be affected, information is shared confidentially with the school’s Designated Safeguarding Lead before the start of the next school day. This enables the school to provide any additional care, understanding and support a child may need. (Derbyshire Police)

What does this mean for families?

  • Information is shared confidentially and only with trained safeguarding staff on a strict need-to-know basis.
  • The aim is not to investigate or intervene in family matters, but to ensure that children are supported and understood during what may be a difficult time.
  • School staff can make appropriate adjustments and provide emotional support to help children feel safe, secure and ready to learn.
  • Families do not need to contact the school following a police-attended domestic abuse incident, as the notification process is managed through Operation Encompass. However, parents and carers are always encouraged to speak with the school if they feel additional support may be helpful.

We recognise that witnessing or being affected by domestic abuse can have a significant impact on a child’s wellbeing, emotional health and ability to learn. Through Operation Encompass, we work alongside partner agencies to ensure children receive the support they need as early as possible.

If you would like more information about Operation Encompass or wish to discuss any safeguarding concerns, please contact the school’s Designated Safeguarding Lead - Keir Mather.
