The programme offered at Horizons continues the Futures Curriculum from St Martins School, building on the questions Who am I? Where am I going? How do I get there? And is based around the Gallery 5, personalised printing enterprise which is serviced, managed and operated by the students.
Horizons is based in Derby City Centre’s Cathedral Quarter offering students the opportunity to develop confidence and independence in the community including choosing and buying their lunch and working towards travelling independently.
Students attend onsite 3 days a week working towards qualifications in Maths, English and a Prince’s Trust personal development and employability certificate. Students develop transferable skills through the Skillsbuilder Programme; 8 essential skills that underpin success at every stage of life and unlock learning.
Opportunities to develop these skills include project work through partnerships with employers in the local area including Derby Museum, the Quad, Better Together Council House café, Derbyshire Wildlife Trust, Severn Trent Water and the cathedral.
Students have the opportunity to attend offsite vocational placements one day a week where students use their learning and skills in different contexts to build their resilience for employment and learn how to lead independent lives.
